Ice Notes

Additions, subtractions and scoring streaks, oh my!

This week the bears acquired forward Taylor Hustead from Pensacola in a cash trade deal. The 25-year-old from Scottsdale, Arizona had a goal and 6 assists in 8 games with the Ice Flyers - nearly a point-a-game average. Last season, Hustead finished among the top 15 SPHL scorers when he teamed-up with Ice Bears newcomer Don Melnyk on the now defunct Twin City Cyclones. To make room for Hustead, the Ice Bears have placed Travis Hanson on the 30 day IR to mend a few nagging injuries.

Speaking of Melnyk - last week, the Bears forward rediscovered his scoring touch. Don Melnyk scored 3 goals over the past 3 games, including a pair of goals on Wednesday in Louisiana - earning him 1st star of the game. Then on Friday, he gets the game winner at Mississippi. Last season, Melnyk finished 3rd in the SPHL scoring race for Twin City with 77 points, and so far this season as an Ice Bear he has 5 goals and 7 points.

In other roster moves, the Ice Bears finally signed rookie defenseman Grant Farrell to a season-long contract. Farrell skated 6 games in 2 different tryouts, recording 3 assists and a plus-2, in the plus-minus stat.

Around the League former Ice Bear D-man Glenn Cacaro caught on with the Mississippi Surge last week, just days after parting with Knoxville.
